water

From Summer 2017 I have been exploring, filming and photographing all the life and beauty with in water droplets. I am experimenting with new technology and projection in an attempt to find effective ways to share with the world my findings in the extraordinary microscopic plant and animal life that exists in ordinary life. I want to show how beauty really can be found everywhere – a muddy puddle, a rock pool, a pond, a canal, a bird bath. My intention is to make films to share somehow with the world in a way where they will feel as absorbed and amazed as I am when I look down the microscope.  I want to facilitate ’shows’ by Mother Nature.

Life inside one droplet of pond water

The above video shows just one droplet of pond water that I filmed until it evaporated. It amazes me that the full drama of life can be seen in just one droplet of water – sex, birth and disease, death and decay and new life forming. Some creatures move around comically, others elegantly…going about their day to day business eating, poohing, mating, attacking, hiding. And some times the full circle of life can be seen with organisms reproducing, being ‘born’, living, slowing down, getting diseases, dying, and finally new life feeds off the decay. In some ways these microscopic organisms are pretty much the same as us…only some of these guys comprise of only 1 cell, where as we are made of about 37.2 trillion cells! It made me think about how we can not escape the bad stuff in life…even if we were an organism in a droplet of water…we need it all….the dark and light. Life is a paradox; awful and wonderful all at the same time. What also fascinates me is that some of my most beautiful finds come from the murkiest of puddles.
